Encino is a small village located in Torrance County, New Mexico, and is part of the Albuquerque Metropolitan Statistical Area (ABQ MSA). Situated approximately 90 miles southeast of Albuquerque, Encino reflects the rural traditions and ranching heritage of central New Mexico.

History

The Encino area developed during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as ranching and agriculture expanded across central New Mexico.

The village’s name, Encino, comes from the Spanish word for oak, referring to the small oak trees that grow in parts of the surrounding region.

Encino was incorporated as a village in 1904, making it one of the older incorporated communities in Torrance County.

During the era of early automobile travel, nearby highways and transportation routes helped connect Encino with larger towns throughout the region.
