History

Albuquerque was founded in 1706 as La Villa de Alburquerque during the Spanish colonial period of New Mexico. The settlement developed along El Camino Real, the historic trade route connecting Mexico City with the northern frontier of New Spain.

Over the centuries the city evolved from a small agricultural village along the Rio Grande into a major transportation and commercial center of the American Southwest.

Today, many historic sites remain, particularly in Old Town Albuquerque, where traditional adobe buildings and San Felipe de Neri Church reflect the city’s Spanish colonial roots.
