Bernalillo is a historic town located in Sandoval County, New Mexico, and is part of the Albuquerque Metropolitan Statistical Area (ABQ MSA). Situated approximately 18 miles north of downtown Albuquerque, Bernalillo serves as the county seat of Sandoval County and is one of the oldest communities in the region.

History

Bernalillo has deep historical roots dating back to the Spanish colonial period. The settlement was established in the early eighteenth century and became an important agricultural and trading community along the Rio Grande.

The town’s name is believed to derive from the Spanish word “Bernalillo,” meaning “little Bernal,” possibly referring to an early Spanish family associated with the region.

Throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Bernalillo developed as a regional center serving nearby farms, ranches, and villages. Today, elements of the town’s historic character remain visible in its architecture, local traditions, and community events.
